Turning technical explanation into scenes on stage

tvN’s SciArt Korea (‘사이아트 코리아’) is a collaboration survival show in which engineering schools and arts schools team up to make stage performances. Twelve universities from across the country took part under the theme of cheering on the 2030 Busan World Expo, and I appeared as the representative of the team from Chung-Ang University’s College of Art & Technology. On this show, Art & Technology played the “engineering school” role.

Korean traditional music and animation on one stage

The final joint stage, made with Pusan National University’s Korean traditional music team, was Hwimori — A Stage for Care and Sharing (‘휘모리 — 돌봄과 나눔의 장’). We told heavy themes such as war, the wealth gap, and hunger through animation that played on a large projection behind the gugak (Korean traditional music) performance, and layered sound interaction generated in real time on top. My job was to bind the language of gugak and the language of film, the grammars of different disciplines, into one flow the audience could follow.

What stayed with me from this experience were the conditions: limited time, multiple clients, people from other fields, and the importance of persuasion. How long to keep persuading, and how far to go. It is a question I bring back out in every collaborative project since.
